04 Committee of the Whole

January 30. National Commodore Nicholas Kerigan opened the meeting stating, “The Committee of the Whole meeting is a semi-official meeting required by the Standing Rules of the National Board. No action or votes are taken; rather it is an opportunity to consider and discuss the issues and recommendations that will come before the Board during Saturday’s official meeting.”

National Vice Commodore Jim Vass congratulated the membership on a fine year. He also expressed his gratitude for an excellent Evergreen workshop earlier in the week.

In the course of the meeting each of the National Area Commodores (ARCO) had an opportunity to recount the significant achievements and progresses by their respective Districts.

The Chief Director of Auxiliary and Boating, Captain Mark Rizzo, USCG, presented his report highlighting significant matters discussed at his meetings with the various District Directors of Auxiliary (DIRAUX) and Operational Training Officers (OTO). He concluded his report with his best wishes to members of his staff that will be leaving before the next Board meeting in September. Included in that group was Commander Val Welicka, Chief Director, Auxiliary Division. In his closing remarks CAPT Rizzo said, “I am proud to serve with the 30,000 members of this fine organization. Semper Paratus.”

NAVCO Jim Vass read four recommendations to the assembly, no vote or action can be taken until the Board convenes tomorrow. Discussion on the recommendations ensued. The results of those recommendations will be reported following the Saturday meeting.

National Chief of Staff Steve McElroy offered brief remarks followed by the President of the National Commodores Association, Commodore Rick Ives. The Association’s “First-Timer to the National Conference” workshop was mentioned as a very successful event.

The meeting was adjourned for the day.
