CITATION TO ACCOMPANY THE AWARD OF
THE AUXILIARY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL
TO
MR. JOEL A. GLASS
UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

Awards

Mr. GLASS is cited for superior performance of duty while serving as Chief, Navigator Publication Branch from January 2006 to July 2008. Mr. GLASS’ exceptional creativity and superb technical skill were instrumental to the composition, editing, and publication of the Auxiliary’s flagship quarterly magazine, Navigator. A consummate professional and team player, Mr. GLASS worked closely with the Coast Guard’s Auxiliary Division to improve magazine layout, material relevance, distribution, and overall magazine appearance. In order to insure Navigator was formatted and provided the publisher by contractual deadlines, Mr. GLASS implemented a process of providing submissions to subject matter experts prior to initial formatting. This process ensured content, titling, and phraseology were accurate and virtually eliminated the need for reformatting of the final version. He personally conducted an exhaustive review of the final page-proofs, made corrections, and released them to the Auxiliary Division for final approval. His attention to detail in this intensive final editing resulted in an impressive error reduction of 75%. By personally mentoring hundreds of contributing Auxiliarists from across the nation, he improved their journalistic skills and led them to craft markedly higher quality articles that comprehensively addressed the diverse range of Auxiliary activities. Mr. GLASS adeptly handled frequent last-minute changes to the magazine drafts, consistently producing finished products on time and within budget. As a direct result of his tireless commitment to customer service, more than 36,000 Auxiliarists, Coast Guard commands, government offices, and boating safety organizations consistently received an attractive and engaging publication each quarter. Mr. GLASS’ diligence, perseverance, and devotion to duty are most heartedly commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
