Commodore SWEENEY is cited for outstanding achievement while serving as National Directorate Commodore, Recreational Boating Safety from January to August 2008. Demonstrating unparalleled organizational devotion, Commodore SWEENEY quickly stepped up on short notice and skillfully took the helm of the Auxiliary’s full gamut of recreational boating safety programs. He exercised exceptional administrative and leadership skill to supervise the development and launch of a boating safety education web site centered about the Auxiliary’s newest course, About Boating Safely. Commodore SWEENEY’s superb political acumen and amicable demeanor were instrumental to the timely and mutually beneficial reconciliation of competing constraints among various interests to deliver this boating safety service. As a direct result of his efforts, the web site rapidly climbed into the top five web sites for online boating safety courses that met the standards of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. A stalwart advocate of professional development, Commodore SWEENEY designed a highly innovative and creative workshop for senior elected officers and program managers to comprehensively address the myriad challenges facing the recreational boating public. He similarly applied his vast programmatic expertise to craft detailed position papers for boating safety organizations, government regulators, and Auxiliarists that clearly addressed many concerns about Auxiliary involvement in the vessel safety check program. Commodore SWEENEY’s dedication, judgment, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
