Mr. NELSON is cited for outstanding achievement while serving as Deputy Chief, Public Affairs Department from November 2006 to January 2008. Mr. NELSON applied superlative program expertise and leadership skill by shepherding the department’s restructuring efforts that significantly streamlined staff functions without any loss in services. Exercising a tenacious affinity for training excellence, he supervised the scheduled execution of 10 Auxiliary public affairs C-schools resulting in over 150 graduates to significantly enhance the Auxiliary’s public affairs program. Mr. NELSON adeptly coordinated development of a new online photography course to replace an outdated paper course. In partnership with the Coast Guard’s Visual Imagery Division, he guided Auxiliary public affairs staff officers to significant improvements in the quality and quantity of images in the Coast Guard’s and Auxiliary’s image libraries. Despite imposing technical challenges, Mr. NELSON thoroughly researched and identified technology-based solutions that facilitated the consolidation of departmental servers and web-based applications and which markedly improved their capacity for display and usage. Demonstrating extraordinary initiative and corporate diplomacy, he worked closely with senior management of Bass Pro Shops and laid the foundation for a formalized partnership designed to cooperatively advance safety messages to America’s boating public. Mr. NELSON’S dedication, judgment, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
