Note: 1. SAREX Events #1 and #2 are separate events but they will both be held within the same two-hour block of time. This block of time includes transit to and from the site, as well as time to run events.
2. Competitors will be issued and will wear floater suits, gloves, goggles and
helmets for Events #1 and #2. Chart used in this event is a chartlet covering the area between Mugg’s Island, north to Harbourfront Centre taken from Canadian Hydrographic Services Chart # 2085, Toronto Harbour.
Purpose
This event evaluates the team’s ability to approach a target vessel and hook-up an alongside (Hip) tow.
Expectations
Sample evaluation elements are: the approach, assessment of the situation, position of the towed and towing vessel, placement of spring and breast lines, appropriate knots for securing the tow, speed of tow, tow watch, and the like. The team is expected to demonstrate forward, backward and turning capabilities of the hook-up.
Equipment
Competitors will use FRC (RHI type) inflatables as rescue vessels. Target or distress vessels will be outboard-powered fiberglass monohulls. All vessels will be driven by non-competing drivers whose primary concern is for the safety of vessels and passengers. A diagram is available on the ISAR Website of a FRC (RHI type) that is similar to those that will be used in the event.
Scoring
Scoring will be based on:
• Seamanship and safety measures taken during transits;
• Communications among the crew, driver and distress boat;
• Approach to the vessel and positioning;
• Effective rigging of alongside (Hip) tow;
• Ability of the towing vessel to control forward, backward and turning motion of the tow.
No communications to higher SAR command will be required.
Judges’ decisions will be final.
There is a 40-minute time limit for this event.
