Chart used for this event will be Canadian Hydrographic Services Chart #2235, Cape Hurd to Lonely Island. Competitors should note that the latitude and longitude of this large-scale chart is marked in degrees, minutes and decimals of a minute. No conversion to seconds will be required. All latitudes, longitudes and position will be given and reported in degrees, minutes and decimals (one place) of a minute.
Purpose
This event evaluates the team’s ability to do the chartwork associated with SAR incidents. No tide calculations are required. Set and drift will be supplied if required.
Expectations
On a large-scale chart, teams will be asked to be familiar with, and plot and label latitude and longitude, course lines and bearings, search areas and search legs, LKP, Datum, CSP, relative and reciprocal bearings, calculate time, speed and distance, elapsed time, 24-hour clock time, and basic chart symbols.
Labeling
• All plotting is to be in true.
• Competitors should be guided by “If you plot it, label it.”
• Variation will be by chart compass rose.
• No deviation will be required.
All Competitors are asked to use the following labelling system in this competition:
• Course is to be written above and parallel to the line, e.g., C 210
• Speed is to be written below and parallel to the line, e.g., S 12.5
• Bearings are to be written with direction above and parallel to the line, e.g., 096
• Bearing times are to be written with time below and parallel to the line, e.g., 1235
• Time of day is to be written using four figures, e.g., 0430
• For any type of fix use a clear dot and label
• Last known position should be marked with LKP
• Commence search point should be marked with CSP
• Datum should be marked with a clear dot and the word Datum.
Accuracy
• positions are to be within 0.1 minute latitude and longitude
• times are to be within one minute
• headings and courses are to be within one degree
Equipment
In addition to a large-scale chart of the appropriate area, a standard package of parallel rules, dividers, pencils, erasers, protractors, stationery and an electronic calculator will be provided. No other charting aids are allowed.
Scoring
Scoring will be based on the degree of accuracy of the plotting, labeling and legibility.
Judges’ decisions will be final.
Administration
Judges may assist in interpretation only. There is a 45-minute time limit for this event..
