Purpose
This event evaluates skills in using a VHF maritime radio in a simulated distress situation.
Expectations
Each team member will man a simulated vessel radio station. Following an outline of events provided to them, they will demonstrate their ability to communicate, using accepted standards of language protocols, channel use and procedures.  DSC will not be part of this evaluation.

The Situation
The local Coast Guard Station is temporarily ‘off air’ because the landline between the antenna and the operation centre has been accidentally severed by an excavator.  Local Auxiliary units have been asked to monitor the radio and respond to emergency/distress calls in their areas until the landline is repaired and the station is up and running.

Your unit has two vessels. One is a sturdy, well-equipped 28’ diesel-powered vessel, with a maximum speed of 14 knots (Diesel Duck).  The other is an 18’ rigid hull inflatable with twin outboard engines and a maximum speed of 30 knots (Tasker Two).  Diesel Duck is at sea with a coxswain and three crew members, involved in training but able to respond.  Tasker Two is at a base slip with a skipper and three other crew members.

It has been agreed that Tasker Two will coordinate the response to any calls, with permission of any vessel needing assistance.  The other vessel involved is a 36’ charter fishing boat (Tuna King) with a single gasoline engine, a captain, and three customers are on board.

Each competitive team member will act as radio operator on one of the three boats.  The decision as to which boat each member mans will be made by the team members.  The operators will be required to handle an emergency/distress situation involving Tuna King.

Scoring
Competitors will be scored on the following:
• Proper voice procedure on the radio;
• Proper voice procedure during emergency/distress situation;
• The ability to gather important information.

Individual team member’s scores will be added together to arrive at a team score.

Judges’ decisions will be final.

There is a 45-minute time limit for this event.
