Purpose
This event evaluates each team member’s ability to use a heaving line to facilitate the rescue of a person in the water (PIW). This will include throwing a heaving line from a dinghy. Competitors will also be tested on their knowledge of basic knots and bends used in search and rescue (SAR) activities.
Expectations
The competitors are expected to do the following:
• Demonstrate seamanship skills related to operating a manually propelled dinghy;
• Accurately reach a PIW, by throwing a heaving line;
• Demonstrate the ability to tie knots and bends which would be used during
SAR operations which are bowline, reef (square), sheet bend (Becket bend), double sheet bend (double Becket bend), figure 8, clove hitch and round turn, two half hitches.
Competitor #1 will throw a heaving line from shore at a floating target. As soon as #1 hits the target, or after five misses, competitors #1 and #2 will board a dinghy and paddle to a floating line. From behind that line, competitor #1 will have three throws, at each of two floating targets. The dinghy will be then rowed back to shore. During this time competitor #3 will be required to demonstrate five simple common knots used in SAR activities. Competitors will then change position for the next rotation. Rotation will continue for the time limit allotted.
Equipment
Safety equipment including helmets and inflatable PFDs will be provided to, and worn by the competitors while participating in the event. Other equipment including manually powered dinghies and throwing lines will be provided and used by the competitors as required.
Scoring
Competitors will be scored on the following:
• Seamanship and safety in operation of the dinghy;
• The number of successful hits on a target;
• Ability to tie the required knots and bends.
Judges’ decisions will be final.
There will be a 40-minute time limit for this event.
