Auxiliary Vessel Safety Checks for Coast Guard Vessels By Donna Cox, Public Affairs Officer, Flotilla 54, D13, Newport, OR
Flotilla 54 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary celebrated National Safe Boating Week (NSBW) by conducting complimentary vessel safety checks (VSCs) on recreational boats at the South Beach Marina, Newport, Oregon. Nine vessel examiners conducted forty-nine safety checks over two Saturdays in May. As part of the observations, CWO4 Rich Glasgow, Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay, invited the Auxiliary to conduct safety checks on the station’s boats. Auxiliarists Tom Murphy and Race Morningstar examined the 25-ft. Rigid Hull, a 47-ft motor lifeboat, and the 52-ft Victory.
All of the vessels were checked against the Federal requirements and all vessels were deemed safe by those standards. Mr. Glasgow and Petty Officer Jason McCommons affixed VSC decals to the port side window proudly signifying their safe status. Mr. Glasgow feels strongly that having the Coast Guard vessels examined by the Auxiliary sets an example of the importance of the same safety standards for the boating public. He would like to see all Coast Guard vessels worldwide receive VSCs annually and proudly show their decals.
Glasgow stated "What better way to support safe boating and the Coast Guard Auxiliary than to have our vessels pass a (vessel safety check) and display a decal." Complimentary VSCs will continue to be offered at the South Beach boat ramp during the summer. |
