Editor’s note: SITREP does not normally report on election results but the following article describes the activity from one of our remote outposts, the USCG Auxiliary of Puerto Rico.  This synopsis of our brother and sister Auxiliarists in the Caribbean should prove interesting to most of our readership.

USCG Auxiliary - Puerto Rico
By Jeffrey De Leon, Division 1 Public Affairs Officer, D7

Nestor J Tacoronte and Diana Figueroa

Recently, Diana Figueroa, Division 1 Captain, and Nestor J Tacoronte, Division 1 Vice Captain of the of Puerto Rico, USCG Auxiliary, were re-elected for a second term. The Puerto Rico Auxiliary is part of District 7.

Both joined the Auxiliary in 1994 and from their beginnings they were devoted to working hard to promote one of the most important missions of this organization, public education. They both taught navigation and safe boating courses. Vessel safety checks also ranks high in their Auxiliary service. In addition, to the educational programs and vessel safety checks they are also active in on-the-water safety patrols.

They attribute their first term success to the great effort and dedication of both leaders and and their staff. By their actions, their commitment to the organization was very evident. Their Division staff was an essential part in mission accomplishments and in achieving their proposed goals during this year.

Division 1, Puerto Rico, is comprised of 310 active members scattered across the island. There are nine flotillas, which are: Fajardo, Cangrejo, Ponce, Dorado, Mayaguez, Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo, San Juan and Santurce.

Recently the Division and three Flotillas were recognized by the Seventh District for their work during the National Week of Security at Sea. The Division was awarded first place, “Best Division” and the Flotillas of Cangrejos and Santurce received the “Better Flotilla” awards.

The membership is always searching for new and innovative ideas to keep the Division running at optimum level. They are and will continue to be involved in marine events thereby carrying the message of safety to all sailors of our island.
