Taking Boating Education
to the Firing Line
There are many different types of marine flares available on the
market, however when you’re faced with an emergency you don’t
have time to sit down and read the directions. Providing sufficient
information on the proper use of the numerous marine flares available
has always been an area of concern. The breakwater in Dana Point Harbor, directly behind the Ocean Institute,
was chosen for safety. It is an open area free of potential fire hazards
while providing easy access for public participation. Fifteen members of Flotilla 29 participated in the “Flare Shoot” demonstrations. The area was cordoned off for reasons of crowd control and safety. Two Auxiliarists were specifically designated as a communication and security detail. They were located on the breakwater within the viewing area. Three Auxiliarists were aboard the Auxiliary vessel facility which was located on the seaward side of the breakwater. They provided a safety zone preventing curious boaters from entering the danger area. They also retrieved any debris as the result of the flare shoot. “This was a great demonstration.” “We are grateful for the opportunity to witness this demonstration.” And, “We hope this will become an annual event,” were some of the comments expressed by the public participants.
