NATIONAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS AWARDS

DISTRICT
D9-CR – Roxanne Firmin

A developing partnership between the Coast Guard Auxiliary and AAA, the largest Automobile Club in North America. Ms. Firmin spearheaded the District’s project, resulting in articles published in AAA’s magazines published in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin; Brochures distributed to AAA offices in the eight states for lobby displays, and calendar information concerning VE blitzes, and Safe Boating Classes on their website. An average of 92 million readers have been reached.

DIVISION
D9-ER-Division 2 – John Stockwell

A year-long program featuring public appearances and safety booths at a State Fair and three boat shows with public attendance for these events nearly 30,000 persons. In addition the Division participated in a parade, several press events with multimedia coverage, and a television show.


FLOTILLA

D5-SR-Flotilla 3-10 – Joseph Riley

< Over a six-week period Auxiliarist and Educator Riley built on his student’s journalistic talents and computer skills in a safe boating project that involver internet search, game playing, class discussion and demonstration, spreadsheet analysis and newspaper layout. The students produced a school-wide newsletter and an Auxiliary display during a parent’s night program, plus two articles in five local newspapers encompassing 15,000 registered boaters. Students were recognized in a special boating supplement by a regional newspaper group, and awards were received from a State Representative and the Auxiliary. The project also resulted in the school’s request that safe boating skills be included in their Life Skills Curriculum.

Photo caption: Tall Ship Irving Johnson Goes Aground
90 foot sailing vessel went aground at the entrance to Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, CA during rough seas. She reportedly hit an unmarked shoal created by sand movement from recent storms in the area, and the great amount of silt flowing from the Santa Clara river just to the north of the harbor. After two days of effort, she was finally refloated Thursday evening, March 24, at high tide.

Of Florida’s Crystal River Flotilla 15-1, Seventh District
"The cremains of Carl Swanson a long time member of Crystal River, Florida Flotilla 15-1 were remanded to the deep from the Flotilla Vessel Zero One. Division Captain Mary Kennedy officiated at the ceremony, held offshore from the mouth of the Crystal River. Several Flotilla facilities were also in attendance, including the Sea Queen (shown in the photo) under the command of owner/coxswain Tom Franz. Aboard the Zero One were Carl's widow and several other family members."
