MR. FRED C. GATES

Mr. GATES is cited for outstanding achievement while serving as Department Chief, Public Affairs from 1 November 2002 to 1 September 2004. Recognizing the need for improved communication at all levels of the Auxiliary, Mr. GATES created a bi-monthly e-mail newsletter to membership that encapsulated the most pertinent information posted on the internet. His innovative e-publication, “Aux e-News”, dependably reached more than 18,000 members with point-to-point up-to-date information across all programs. Similarly, he helped the Auxiliary online magazine, “SITREP”, reliably post nearly 100 human interest stories about Auxiliarists in action, including photographic support for and detailed reports on major Auxiliary events. Astutely recognizing the need for more and better Coast Guard photographs, graphics and clip-art, Mr. GATES created the Auxiliary Imagery Library that housed over 2,000 images for use in Auxiliary publications and public outreach efforts. Committed to the advancement of Coast Guard and Auxiliary advertisement, he was instrumental in the design and execution of the first Auxiliary Public Affairs “C” School that provided a comprehensive foundation in training, writing, photography and interviewing techniques for Coast Guard and Auxiliary public affairs specialists. Mr. GATES’ dedication, judgment, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
