SUMMARY OF SERVICE

1. Initiated a Public Education Best Practices Newsletter. Utilizing inputs from staff members at all levels, this periodical documents valuable teaching techniques for application throughout the organization.

2. Created a one-way list server service permitting Boating Law Administrators in each state to communicate directly to Auxiliarists who need to know about updates and changes to state boating regulations.

3. Took the lead establishing America’s Boating Course as the primary one-day public education course in the Auxiliary. Working through the ABC consortium was able to establish price reduction for ABC textbooks making ABC now comparable to Boating Safely in cost.

4. Worked with the Southern Region Boy Scouts of America to establish the Coast Guard Auxiliary as the supplier of public education boating textbooks for the Southern Region Yachting Initiative. The Southern Region B.S.A. operates in part or all of thirteen states with approximately 100,000 youths participating in the program.

5. For the year 2004, reestablished the practice of offering an annual PE workshop for all PE Instructors. The comprehensive workshop covered a wide range of topics that included a review of all PE products, ways to acquire up to date electronic delivery equipment, and a review of basic teaching techniques.

6. Created a Waterway Watch program to enable the recreational boating public, and others, to participate in Maritime Domain Awareness efforts. The program may be used in public education classes, during vessel safety checks and for public speaking engagements.

7. Established a PE Media Library on the Department web page to house pertinent material, i.e., PPTs, on multi lesson courses, seminar courses, instructor aids, publications and software tools. The basic material required to teach any PE course may be downloaded ready for use.

8. Served as an associate member of the NASBLA Education Committee while content standards and testing standards were developed.
