100 Years on Watch
Old Coast Guard Station, Virginia Beach, VA. Auxiliarists from Flotillas 54 and 57 participated in the recent 100th Anniversary celebration of the “Old Coast Guard Station” at Virginia Beach. Fifth Coast Guard District Commander, Rear Admiral Sally Brice O'Hara and Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Obendorff spoke during the ceremonies. The Mayor read her proclamation designating the day as "Old Coast Guard Station Day" and Admiral Brice O'Hara presented a citation to the Old Coast Guard Station and its personnel. The Auxiliarists provided a safe boating class for children, and acted as ushers and guides at the ceremony. The Old Coast Guard Station, museum and gift shop are housed in a former Coast Guard/Service Station, the only existing station in Virginia. In the exhibits you will find the tales of shipwrecks and rescues. The role of the Coast Guard from the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II to the present day is chronicled. A unique gift shop is in the oceanfront museum.
