Unusual Award

Flotilla 13-6, D5-SR was a recent recipient of an unusual award. The award was in the form of a brick on the Anne Arundel County (MD) Trail walk of fame.

Flotilla 13-6, in conjunction with personnel from Anne Arundel County, teaches the Maryland State Basic Boating course. Most of the proceeds from the fees collected go to the “Friends of The Anne Arundel County Trail.”

Personnel from the “Friends” do the class advertising, order supplies, assist with class registration and help with the grading on test night. This allows members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-6 to do what they do best, teach the public by sharing their knowledge and lore

Because of the hard work and joint efforts of the Auxiliarists of Flotilla 13-6 and the many volunteers at the Anne Arundel County Trail, the flotilla teaches basic boating to over 200 people a year.

Graduates of the basic class have gone on, encouraged by the instructors, to take a class that is more advanced, request vessel safety checks, and even join the Auxiliary.
