I Department Gets Blasted By Mel Borofsky, BC-ADG, Editor SITREP
The Information Systems Department is noted for their interesting if not spectacular presentations. Unbeknownst to them a surprise was waiting for them in cyberspace. COMO Marilyn McBain, Department Chief, Information Systems was nearing the end of her AUXINFO presentation when the evil monster struck. To fully describe the capabilities of AUXINFO and the techniques needed to navigate the system, COMO McBain tapped into a live feed to AUXINFO via the Internet. To the shock of the 40 or so workshop attendees the “Blaster Worm” virus struck her computer and shut it down. A few in the room recognized the worm and knew the inevitable outcome…. The computer was pretty much out of commission unless someone had a copy of the “antidote” patch. A call for assistance went out and lo and behold, SEMPER PARATUS….. Auxiliarist Phil Heisler just happened to have the necessary tool to administer the first aid. All was not lost in the presentation. As a matter of fact, the first
hand look-see of a virus in action was a practical demonstration of
the insidious nature of a virus. Auxiliarist Diane Berman of Gainesville,
FL summed up the lesson learned, saying, “I’m pretty sure
I’ve downloaded the updates supplied by Microsoft, now I’m
going to double check and make sure.” |
