"Mystery Event"

(Click here to see pictures.)

The purpose of this event is to simulate an abandonment of a vessel at sea. One individual from each team is chosen by the team to act as the active participant in this event. The remaining team members can encourage and cheer their participant on, the exception being that the team can assist the participant in retrieving the loud whistle from its container at the whistle station.

1. Each participant will start this event fully clothed in normal dress, judges will assure conformity,
2. Each participant will select a proper size PPE suit from the pile provided,
3. The participant will stand behind the start line until the start horn is sounded,
4. The participant will properly and completely don the PPE suit, using all covers and straps,
5. The participant will then run to Station #1 where lengths of rope are hung, the participant will remove one length of rope and tie a correct bowline, the participant on correct completion of the knot, per the judge, will drop the line and move to Station #2
6. At Station #2 the participant will remove the face cover and blow an “SOS” using the loud whistle retrieved from the box at the station (team members may assist). The “SOS” signal must be correct, per the judge, the participant must then reapply the face cover of the PPE suit,
7. The participant then must run down either the dock and enter the water;
a. From the dock, the participant may either climb down the ladder or jump into the water,
b. If the participant chooses, he/she may walk into the water using the boat launch ramp.
8. Using proper PPE swimming procedure, the individual must swim to the rescue raft as indicated in the initial briefing.
9. The exercise will end as soon as the participant touches the raft. The participant does not have to enter the raft.

This is a timed event. Judges along the way will not allow a participant to continue until the segment is properly completed. The judges will also stop the participant if, in their opinion, the participant is in an unsafe mode (PPE, technique, etc.).
