(Click here to see pictures.)

The purpose of this event is to evaluate the team's ability to perform a basic water rescue scenario from the shoreline.

1. Upon arrival at this event, the team will be provided a scenario involving a person in the water near the shoreline. The casualty is conscious, but suffering from severe hypothermia. He is able to hold onto a line, but is unable to swim or to help himself in any other way;
2. The team will be required to don all PPE necessary for water rescue operations;
3. Once the event is started, the team will use a rescue throw bag to establish a line contact with the PIW;
4. Once the line contact is established, the casualty will be towed to the beach, where he will then be placed in a Femo model 71 basket stretcher;
5. Once the casualty is secured in the stretcher, he will be carried to the casualty staging area, where a primary and secondary survey will be conducted and the casualty treated for severe hypothermia;
6. The event will end when the casualty is properly secured in the stretcher and hypothermia capsule and the judges are informed that the casualty is ready for transport.
7. The standard for this event will be the Canadian Coast Guard SAR Seamanship Reference Manual, Section 12.3 - Hypothermia. This manual is available on the World Wide Web.

The team will be evaluated in the areas of safety, rescue techniques, casualty handling and transfer, hypothermia recognition and treatment, documentation and time and a point score will be assigned to the team.
