"HEAVING LINE 3"

(Click here to see pictures.)

The purpose of this event is to evaluate the team's ability to maneuver a six person liferaft from floating dock 1 (simulating the rescue vessel) to floating dock 2 (simulating the distress vessel) and to use a heaving line, attached to a six person liferaft, as a means of evacuating three survivors from dock 2 to dock 1.

1. Upon arrival at this event, all 3 team members will proceed to dock 1;
2. The team will be required to don all PPE necessary for water rescue operations;
3. Once the event is started, Team Member 1 will attach a heaving line to the liferaft, while Team Members 2 and 3 board the liferaft, taking a second heaving line with them. Once the heaving line is attached to the liferaft, Team Members 2 and 3 will paddle from dock 1 to dock 2, using the paddles provided;
4. Upon their arrival at dock 2, Team Member 2 will disembark and attach the second heaving line to the liferaft. Team Member 3 will remain in the liferaft. Once this is completed, Team Member 2 will load one of the three survivors (rescue dummy) into the liferaft using the heaving lines attached, the raft with one survivor and one rescuer on board will be towed across the water from dock 2 back to dock 1;
5. Once the liferaft is alongside dock 1, the survivor will be removed from the liferaft which will then be towed across the water from dock 1 back to dock 2 with the rescuer remaining onboard;
6. Once the raft is back alongside dock 2, a second survivor will be loaded and the process continues until survivors 2 and 3 are safely evacuated, one at a time, to the rescue vessel;
7. Once all 3 survivors have been evacuated, the raft will be towed back to dock 2 where Team Member 2 will untie the second heaving line and then board the liferaft. Team Member 1 will then tow the liferaft back to dock 1;
8. Once the liferaft is secured alongside dock 1 and Team Members 2 and 3 disembark, the event will end.

Please note that heaving line 1 cannot be attached to the liferaft until Team Members 2 and 3 board the liferaft. Failure to complete this evolution as per these instructions will result in a 20-second penalty being applied to the team's overall score.

Heaving line 2 cannot be attached to the liferaft until Team Member 2 disembarks at dock 2. Failure to complete this evolution as per these instructions will result in a 20second penalty being applied to the team's overall score.

Safety violations will result in a 30-second penalty being applied to the team's overall score.

The team with the fastest time (including penalties) will receive 40 points. The team with the second fastest time will receive 30 points and so on.
