"HEAVING LINE 1"

(Click here to see pictures.)

The purpose of this event is to evaluate the team's ability to throw a heaving line at a stationary, floating target for accuracy to obtain points.

1. The floating target is designed to snag the heaving line so that a team member, in a liferaft, will have to paddle to the target, remove the heaving line, and be pulled back to the throwing position;
2. The liferaft team member will be properly attired in the necessary PPE before boarding the liferaft;
3. The floating target will have scoring rings of 10, 20 and 30 points. Heaving lines that miss the target or fail to stay attached to the target for manual release, will not receive a point score;
4. The team member in the liferaft is not permitted to paddle to the target until the heaving line has been thrown and is attached to the target;
5. The line thrower is not permitted to throw the heaving line until the liferaft is back alongside the pier;
6. Team members are permitted to rotate through the line throwing and liferaft positions but this is not mandatory;
7. The time allotted for this exercise is 15 minutes.

At the end of the exercise, the total points accumulated by each team will be tabulated.
