“ON-WATER SAR EXERCISE (SAREX)”

(Click here to see pictures.)

The purpose of this event is to evaluate the team's ability to successfully execute the plan developed in the Search Planning phase of the competition and to submit an accurate SAR Incident Report upon completion of this evolution.

All scenarios have been developed by a Canadian Coast Guard, Maritime SAR Coordinator and are based on documented SAR cases involving Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels.

1. Upon arrival at this event, the team will be assigned to a Coast Guard Fast Rescue Craft (FRC). The FRC will be driven by a certified Coast Guard operator, who will provide no input and is responsible for the safe operation of the FRC only;
2. The team will be required to don all personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for FRC operations. At this time, the FRC will depart the CCG Base with the Auxiliary crew onboard to execute the search plan. Once the search object is located, the emergency situation will be resolved and the crew will return to base (RTB);
3. Once the FRC is properly secured alongside at the CCG Base, the team will accurately complete the SAR Incident Report Form provided;
4. The time allotted for this exercise is 30 minutes.

At the end of the exercise, a point score will be assigned to the team.

The team will be evaluated in the following areas: safety, the proper wearing of personal protection equipment (PPE), the organization of search spotters and the coverage of search sectors, the execution of the search plan, radio and team communications, location of the search object and the resolution of the incident and the accurate completion of the SAR Incident Report Form.
