ISAR 2003 By Mel Borofsky, BC-ADG, Editor SITREP
As all attendees gathered for the opening ceremonies of ISAR 2003, Harry Strong CEO of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) remarked, “What a glorious day, we couldn’t ask for better weather.” And indeed it was a glorious, sunny afternoon. The air temperature was in the mid 60’s, the breeze was mild, sea birds were squawking; it was time to get down to the business at hand. Accompanied by a Canadian Forces Band, a young lady of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) sang the national anthems of Canada and the United States. The presentation of a wreath followed an invocation. The wreath was dedicated to the memory of worldwide sailors who were lost at sea. The attendees sang the “Sailors Hymn” and a FRC (Fast Rescue Craft), manned by “Coasties” from CCG Station St. John’s, carried the wreath two miles out to sea. “Greetings to everyone coming to visit us this year. We are pleased to welcome you to St. John’s, Newfoundland, to be part of the success of ISAR 2003. Good luck everyone,” said CGA CEO Harry Strong in his opening remarks. USCG Auxiliary National Commodore Bill Edgerton’s remarks included words of encouragement to all of the participants. The Commodore declared, “By being here and participating in ISAR 2003, you are all winners. Good luck to you all.” Some good hearted ribbing was shared between the two Auxiliary leaders. This brought forth considerable laughter from those gathered. Additional words of welcome were offered by Mr. Winston Pitcher, President of the CCGA, Newfoundland and Labrador and Mr. John Adams, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard and Mr. John Butler, Regional Director of the CCG. The Mayor of St. John’s, His Honor, Mr. Andy Wells read a proclamation
from the members of the City Council. In the proclamation, declaring
September 26, 2003 as “International Volunteer Search and Rescue
Day,” the Mayor stated, The time had finally come for the Canadian Coast Guard Coordinator
of events, Mr. Neil Peet to proclaim, “Let the games begin.” |
